October 1999Action Time! - Speaker Positioning I'm compiling a list of tips that everybody has on speaker positioning! Send us your tips! Some questions to get you started: Where did you place the sub? How far apart are your front speakers? Did you use any stands for the rear? Did you use your own custom stands? Do you have the rear speakers by your side instead of behind you? Do they sound better? Which position worked the best for you? Which brand of speakers do you use? Are you using different sets of speakers for the front and rear? How do they sound?
Has anybody figured out how the 4-pole digital minijack output (the yellow socket) on the new SBLive! cards are configured? Besides being able to get a Mini-DIN (2 x S/PDIF, front & rear) output using the cable that Creative is providing for connecting to the FPS2000/DTT250, I think it would be possible to create a customized cable to get a normal coaxial S/PDIF output too. Perhaps even for both the front and rear channels. Please mail me your findings!
Jeremy from AGN Hardware posted this bit of news for those of you with FPS2000 speakers and one of the new SBLive! cards with the yellow digital out minijack: ...it seems like the X-Gamer and MP3+ want an adapter to work with your FPS 2000 digital speakers that is not included in the standard box. Creative will send you the adapter for free, you need to call their Customer Service Number (1-800-998-1000) and tell them you have the FPS 2000 and X-Gamer of MP3+ Sound cards. They will then take down all of your information and send the adapter your way. Future FPS2000 speaker sets that are released next month will include the adapter for hooking up to the X-Gamer and MP3+ inside the box. In addition, I believe new shipments of the DTT2500 will also have these cables. Now I wonder if an adaptor cable is available to get a S/PDIF output from the minijack.
ALive! used to have polls and now they're back! Check them out! You are welcomed to mail me any ideas or suggestions for the next poll question that would interest you.
FINALLY! The downloadable version is now available. You have to go through the usual registration thingy if you have not done so before. This page lists the things you will only get if you buy the CD version.
I went down to Creative to attend their press launch for the Sound Blaster Live! Platinum and the 3D Blaster GeForce. Find out what happened! As promised, the new gaming section has been set up! Click the games link in the black navigation bar available on every page! Right now we have some news up there, and some guys have offered to help us write reviews which you will see very soon! If you would like to do reviews and news for us, drop us a mail. Also if you come across any interesting gaming related news, do send them in to us as well.
Seems like many of us really hate the screwy installation procedure of the Live!Ware 3 CDs and this new registration thingy: I bought a Player 1024 for my second PC and proceeded to use the driver CD on my original SB Live! card. It's nothing short of an absolute bloody nightmare trying to get it not to run the registration progamme and go straight to the installers. Like your post says, wait for and buy the CD from the Live! site. - Mik People just THINK the CD rips are buggy. I got my real, official LiveWare 3 CD today, and it was indeed buggy just like the rips. Autoplay was non-functional, and the file that autoplay.inf refers to (CTRUN.EXE) runs the registration, but not the rest of the install. I was able to get it to run properly by manually running SETUP.EXE in the x:\audio\setup directory. Creative screwed the pooch on this one. - J. Turnley
Quick News
I have decided to remove the links to the drivers as there are many of you mailing me with problems, and we don't want to be responsible for "promoting piracy". Meanwhile, hang in there! We hear the downloadable version will be available soon. Especially since they are already packaged with the new SBLive! cards, nothing is preventing Creative from quickly releasing them. I've been invited by Creative to attend the launch of the Sound Blaster Live! Platinum and the 3D Blaster GeForce Annihilator! Check back soon for a report of my visit! :)
Copies of Live!Ware 3 rips from the driver CD of the SBLive! Player, MP3+ and X-Gamer are popping up. Note that these are not official and if you would like minimal installation headaches, I'd suggest waiting for the official downloadable version which should be available at www.sblive.com in one or two week's time. A better alternative (if you are in the US) would be to purchase the CD from Creative. It also made an appearance in Usenet alt.binaries.sounds.utilities although the availability of that depends on your ISP's news server - how long they keep newsgroup postings, and if they host the alt.binaries.sounds.utilities newsgroup on their server.
Kay informed us that the European version of the SBLive! Platinum will come with not the Live!Drive which you have seen so often, but the Live!Drive II which has optical input and output! See the specifications! Now I wonder why this is the case. US customers don't need optical? I don't think so. Any theories?
Athlon Compatibiltiy & Drivers for SBLive! Value
Jonny sent this to us: With regards to the Athlon incompatibilty with Liveware updates, I find this to be very untrue as I installed my Liveware successfully into my system without a hitch. However, I noticed the latest SB Live value with digital out uses modified drivers as compared to the old ones without the digital out. Drivers meant for SB live values without digital out will not work on SB Live with digital out. The problems that one of our readers posted to us (on 27 September) seems to be an isolated case. I have not received any other mails regarding Athlon compatibility issues. Seems to work fine!
Just noticed on Creative corporate website that Creative MediaRing Talk 99 is free for download for all customers. Apparently, MediaRingTalk 99 is a internet telephony software. Here's a rip out from the download page : Creative MediaRing Talk '99 is a voice communication software that lets you make FREE international and long distance PC-to-PC calls over the Net. This user-friendly software features:
An entire suit of value-added services has also been developed to complement the software:
More info can be found at Creative VoiceChat. While you're there, try the Creative VoicePersonas demo. VERY COOL. Apparently, you can use Creative MediaRing Talk 99 and morph your voice while conversing with another party ! Of course, the requirements are that to use this feature, you need to have a SB Live! and LW 3.0 ( which is not available for download yet but is available if you got the new series of SB Live! ..eg X-Gamer )
3DsoundSurge has a a review of the Theater 2000 virtual Dolby system add-on featuring TruSurround technology by SRS Labs that you often see in consumer products. Eric from Hong Kong tells us of his sightings of the Creative's GeForce 3D graphics card: Yesterday, I saw the CL GeForce256 32MB retail box in one of the famous computer shopping centers in Sham Shui Po, Hong Kong. The CL GeForce is distributed directly from the authorized distributor, not a private import. Most of the stores in the shopping center have stock. The price is HK$1,788, around S$390, it's cheaper than a Matrox G400Max retail box. The NOMAD II is announced. [see the press release]
Want to exchange SoundFonts with others? Jono Fosh has started an exchange ring just for this purpose. Check out the musician section for more information on how you can be a part of this!
I went down to Creative's Singapore showroom and saw a display of the Platinum! The interesting thing was the Live!Drive. You may think it only has one set of header pins to connect to the SBLive! card, but instead, it has 4 sets of header pins for different connection options, including one called TO EMU10K2. I've updated the Platinum feature with my findings, as well as some thoughts on the specifications. Sidetrack: I also saw that Creative has their 3D Blaster GeForce Annihilator 3D graphics card (based on NVIDIA's next generation GeForce 256 chipset) on sale! Yes - ON SALE NOW for S$425 (Singapore dollars). I was thoroughly surprised, as these cards haven't even appeared in retail yet! Though I managed to get ticked off by a rude Creative staff just by picking up the Annihilator's box to take a look at the specs.
