Q: Do you think the editing tools like Vienna are powerful enough? Vienna is a very powerfull editing tool. With which one can do just about everything the SF2.01 format (assuming that somebody is using it on a SB Live! with SF2.1 support) offers . The only real limitation of Vienna is that it does not support certain macro-like functions. To give an example. In a photo editing package like photoshop you can edit pictures in several ways. One is pixel-per-pixel and another is by using a tool that does things like color transitions for you. Just like with pictures you want to be able to easily make some changes to soundfonts. For instance if you've made extensive changes to one sample you might wan to quickly apply those to others. What also comes to mind is drawing (possibly graphically) in a 'keyboard table' the way how LFO's/reverb/loudness levels/etc. should change over the range of notes. An example would be that samples in a certain layer sound very loud at C4 but become less loud the higher the note it while at the same time the filter settings change. The SF2.01 format has some limitations for these things but they can be set be setting all parameters specifically per note per layer. If Vienna would save things like 'keyboard table' settings in a special file or part of the SF2 file (which allows editing them afterwards) it would be much easier and time saving to achieve some truely amazing results. To put it more generally: The problem with Vienna is that except for some 'global' parameters everthing has to be set manually per sample per layer etc. Otherwise Vienna is a great program with a great user interface when comparing to editing tools provided with other soundcards.
As I said before. It's simply stunning, especially considering the price. The MIDI playback quality and capabillities just about beats or meets anything available in the low/mid-end market. The only thing that I'm a bit disappointed about are the filters, but all the other pro's more than make up for it.
No. As I explained already Utopia Live! was specifically developed for the SB Live! range of soundcards, even though the EMU8000 still is quite a powerfull DSP the changes which would have to be made to make Utopia Live! perform and sound correctly on EMU8000 based cards would be tremendous. Since we don't think there is still a market for such a product it's not likely that we'll ever make a special AWE version of Utopia Live!
That's all for the interview! If you got any further queries, you can e-mail Roel.
