Utopia Live! SoundFont - Interview

Q: Any comments comparing your SoundFont with the others available free to the public and how would you justify that users should pay for your SoundFont instead of getting the free ones?

I'll just sum up a few things about Utopia Live!:

  1. Utopia Live! was developed to approach the balance (on which alone half a year was spend) that can be found on the Roland Sound Canvas (the GM/GS standard). The result is that Utopia Live! sounds great with nearly all types of music whether it's jazz, classical music or some more modern music using synthpads etc. Utopia Live! however does not sound like any existing synthesizer since, we only tried to simulate the balance/feeling, NOT it's soundset.
  2. The sounds in Utopia Live! are overal sound very good and can be combined with each other without getting bad side-effects like instruments that don't fit in with the rest or which are badly looped/tuned. One of the mistakes that authors of other soundfonts make is that they want all of their sounds to sound as realistic as possible (which often results in that they combine the best instruments they can find, sometimes badly tuned and looped) but this isn't possible for a GM/GS soundfont if you want to maintain balance. What we did was aiming at the best possible balance and adjusted the reality level to that, instead of doing it the other way around. A GM/GS soundfont should sound as good as possible with as many MIDI files as possible and that's exactly what Utopia Live! does.
  3. We did not aim our resources at a certain group of instruments but spent the available space for samples equally over all the sounds.
  4. Utopia Live! was developed purely for the SB Live! taking full advantage of most if not all of it's features.
  5. Utopia Live! sounds unique, alive and has depth never heard in other GM/GS soundfonts before.
  6. Has a full stereo percussion kit (using a special technique for enhancing the stereo effect/depth) and some stereo instruments. Most non-stereo instruments have a 'simulated stereo effect' (not done with a cheesy chorus effect like most other soundfonts do) which is which gives just that little more fuller and dynamic sound you miss in other soundfonts.
  7. Utopia Live! is extremely compact and features things like stereo percussion, stereo instruments and crystal clear sounds sounds that till now have not been heard from any other GM/GS soundfont.
  8. Utopia Live! is perfectly tuned and looppoints are as good as undetectable. In other words most of the time you can't even hear that a sample is looped.

Two somewhat more general points:

  1. We have a track record. We know how to make quality GM/GS patchsets correctly.
  2. Utopia Live! only costs 20$ a price low enough so that everybody can afford it. For this price you can chose between downloading the package and receiving it on a CD (for no extra costs).
