Utopia Live! SoundFont
Written by Clarence Song

The Instruments

Overall, Utopia Live! is very well balanced and sounds true to the claims of the authors that it has a "warm" and "ambient" sound. The instruments aren't loud and brash, but when mixed together to create a song, they blend well.

Pieces like Fantasy.MID, Nance.MID and Stairs26.MID that came installed with Live!Ware 3 sounded much better than the version using EMU's GM SoundFonts.

(The MIDI files can be found in "Program Files\Creative\SBLive\Media\Midi", unless you changed the default installation directory during installation.)

I particularly liked the pianos which sounded good for their size. The strings were warm and the slow strings was atmospheric. The trumpet, brass, nylon string guitar and basses were nice too.

Drums

Having a good drum set really brings out a General MIDI soundset. Utopia Live! has one of the best GM drumsets I have heard. The base samples used are high quality and the authors have carefully programmed the drum set in stereo, which makes it sound reverberated and spread-out. It quickly makes any piece with drums sound very nice!

In addition, the extra drum sets supported by Roland's GS were also included:

  • standard
  • room
  • power
  • electronic
  • TR-808
  • jazz
  • brush
  • orchestral
