BackgroundBack in Oct 1998, Creative announced a "revolutionary" customer program unheard of in the PC industry to boost the launch of their flagship product, the SBLive! . This program is known as Live!Ware and what it really aims to do is to expand the functionality and features of SBLive! through software/driver updates , thereby protecting the customer investment. Understandably, a lot of consumers look upon this program as a huge plus point when shopping for their next sound card and most started drawing up a list of features they want added to the card ! Not surprisingly, there're also competitors and cynical consumers who smell a fish somewhere and quickly dismissed it as a pure marketing gimmick What the latter camp didn't realise is that when Creative touted EMU10K1's flexibility and potential, they doesn't seem to be joking. Since the launch of Live!Ware 1.0 program, the following upgrades/updates has been made to available to SBLive! owners:
With these updates and EAX 1.0, Dave Rossum ( Chief Scientist of Creative Labs ) estimated that only about 50% of EMU10K1's power is tapped ( Dave Rossum Interview) . And he should know cause he's involved directly in the design of the chip ! Anyway, Aureal's much hyped Vortex 2 was launched in Dec1998 and blew a lot of people away with one thing - it's superior audio positioning ( the wavetracing stuff was somewhat subjective depending on user's taste ) . As expected, SBLive! owners started kicking up a fuss ( which include yours truly...hee hee ), demanding better audio positioning and more sophisticated 3D audio effects like occlusions and reflections. Other than the nutty gamers ( like yours truly again..) , general users would also like to see improvements in other areas like more intuitive control interface for this beast of a sound card. Creative's answer ? Live!Ware 2.0 .......
