Hoontech Digital I/O Card
Written by Clarence Song

If you are one of the many people out there who have devices which supports only optical digital I/O, the digital I/O card (model CT4660 that comes with a 1st generation non-OEM and non-Value Live! card) would probably be not of much use. Many of the consumer-level devices like MiniDisc recorders and DAT decks only have optical I/O.

If you have a digital amplifier which only accepts optical I/O, this card will work great. Now you can output sounds from the SBLive! in Live!Surround mode digitally to your amp.

The I/O card connected to a SBLive! Value

Hoontech has been doing many digital I/O devices for quite some time. Their product line-up includes DAC/ADC converters, MIDI I/O boxes, high-end sound cards, digital amplifiers and other cool gear aimed at the multimedia musician and semi-pros.

When the Sound Blaster Live! was released, they noticed of the lack of optical I/O, and even wanted to improve the sound of the SBLive!, so they came up with the Digital I/O for SBLive/Value and the SoundTrack Digital Amp 4CH. These two products work hand in hand to provide better sound quality from your SBLive! card. Read on to find out...

Sound Blaster Live!

As you can see from the snapshot, there are 2 vertical groups of pin headers on the lower-right portion of the card (circled in white). The longer one to the right has 36 pins and connects to the full SBLive! version.

I used the cable which came with the original digital I/O card, and connected it to Hoontech's card. Now I'm ready for some pure digital goodness!

Sound Blaster Live! Value

The headers for the Value are 12 pins, beside the header for the full SBLive! version (smaller white circle).

Since the Value does not come with any digital I/O card, or any cables for that matter, Hoontech has included a cable which connects the Value to the digital I/O card.

If you have a SBLive! Value, this card will enable you to output the sound from the card as digital signals, a feature omitted from the Value so that Creative can bring this sound card to the market at a lower price point.

This cable takes your SBLive! Value into digital heaven!
