Hoontech Digital Amp

Written by Clarence Song

Front Controls

The Digital Amp is designed to fit nicely into a 5.25" drive bay. But it may prove a little troublesome to route the digital output and power supply from the I/O card (which are outside the casing) to the Digital Amp, where the connectors are inside the casing. Due to the connectors available behind the Digital Amp, it would be better to leave it outside the casing.

The front and rear volumes can be adjusted individually with the 2 volume knobs. The 2 indicators labeled LEFT and RIGHT will blink when there is sound in the left and right outputs of the front channel respectively.

There is a center volume slider labeled "CEN VOL", which does not work, since there's no such thing as a "center channel" in the SBLive!'s configuration. This slider may have been a leftover from previous Hoontech products which also relied on the same design.

There are 5 sliders for the equalizer for adjusting the sound at 110Hz, 340Hz, 1.1kHz, 3.4kHz and 11kHz. The equalization circuitry can be bypassed entirely with the EQ On/Off button.

Back Panel

Here you see the back of the Digital Amp. The 3 black round holes labeled MIC1, MIC2 and LINE IN do not have any connectors. You can actually peep into them and see what's inside the Digital Amp! These most probably are used in other Hoontech products which rely on the same back panel configuration during manufacturing.

The 15-pin D-SUB connector labeled DIGITAL IN accepts a digital input signal from compatible Hoontech products like the Digital I/O Boxes.

Digital Inputs

There are 2 coaxial digital inputs labeled D-IN1 and D-IN2. Each input will take in a S/PDIF digital signal, which is in stereo. These 2 inputs will allow the Digital Amp to process 4 channels of sound - 2 for the front (left & right) and 2 for the rear as well.

These 2 cables are provided to connect the output from the digital I/O card to the D-IN1 and D-IN2 coaxial inputs behind the Digital Amp. As you can see, the Digital Amp uses a modified miniplug socket which is not an industry standard. Fortunately, Hoontech has provided these cables so that the Digital Amp can be used with any device that provides a RCA style S/PDIF digital output.

There is also an optical input that can be connected to any digital device (CD players, MiniDisc decks, etc.) to the Digital Amp for higher resolution digital-to-analog conversion.
