Manufacturer: Cambridge SoundWorks Retail Price: US $199
IntroductionIf you're attuned to the PC platform, you couldn't have missed that the PC audio landscape has changed dramatically over the past year. The main buzz has been centered around 3D positional audio ( besides the EAX and A3D 2.0 catfight ) and with it, we see a whole slew generation of hardware that supports this feature directly. For example, all soundcard manufacturers like Creative, Yamaha and Aureal implement multi-speaker support in their soundcards and speaker companies Altec Lansing and Videologic ( bet you dunno they make speakers huh? ) have also jumped on the multiple speaker bandwagon. Before I proceed on the FPS 2000 review, let's take a look at how this new multiple speaker started. Contrary to popular belief, the SB Live! is not the 1st card that supports 4 speaker output. That honour belongs to the MX200 ( nope it's not a typo ) from Diamond . However, despite having the early lead into the market, Diamond failed in it's attempt to evangelize the importance of having multi-speakers on the PC platform . This is because positional audio is still a relatively new concept in the PC audio arena then. Of course, the fact that Diamond does not own a speaker unit doesn't help matters much too.
