Installing the Hardware
The DTT2500 comes unassembled in a big box. Cambridge SoundWorks
provided all the necessary stuff you need to get you up and going. These
include desktop stands for all 5 satellites, a monitor stand
for the center speaker, and floor stands for the 2 surround
satellites. The floor stands are more sturdy and taller than those provided
with the FPS2000, so now you can have the rear speakers closer to ear
level.
Wall anchors are also included if you need to attach
the speakers to a wall, or if you can't have the speakers behind you,
the manual also recommended mounting the speakers below the computer desk
and have them point outwards.
There are 4 3 meter speaker cables for the front,
left, center and the subwoofer. 2 5 meter speaker cables are included
for the 2 rear satellites.
Some adhesive labels with words like "L" and "SUB",
meaning left and subwoofer, are thoughtfully provided so that you can
label the speaker and the cable which is connected to the spekaer as you
set them up, to avoid connecting them to the wrong output on the amp.
And of course, a Mini DIN cable is included for connecting
to the SBLive! A S/PDIF cable is also provided to connect to the
PC-DVD's decoder card or a DVD player. Finally, a dual-minijack cable
with 2 minijacks on each end to connect to an analog source (front and
rear) if the sound card is not a SBLive!, or for a SBLive! without Mini
DIN capability.
Speaker Placement
The speakers are magnetically shielded, so you can
place them close to a monitor without affecting the picture.
There are 3 ways you can place the front speakers (left
and right):
- on a flat surface using the provided desktop stands
- beside a monitor using the hook and loop fasteners
- on a wall behind the monitor with the wall anchors
The 2 surround speakers can be placed in 3 positions:
- on a flat surface using the desktop stands
- mounted on the floor stands
- on a wall behind the listening position with the wall anchors
The subwoofer can be placed anywhere, although I
would recommend that it be placed close to a wall so that the maximum
effect of the bass can be felt!
The center speaker can be placed in the following
positions:
- on top of a monitor using the monitor stand
- slightly below the listening position with the desktop stand
If you placed the center speaker using the desktop stands
that angle the speaker slightly upwards, and if it was placed on top of
a monitor, the sound will go way above your listening position. The monitor
stand angles the center speaker slightly downwards so that sound from
the center is also aimed at the listening position when placed on top
of a monitor.
These methods aren't the only ones you can use to set up
the speakers. With some hardware from your local hardware store, you can
let your imagination go. I have a friend who somehow managed to attach
the desktop stands of the rear speakers of his FPS2000 on the ceiling
of his room, having them point down to his listening position! :)
The setting up was quite tedious, but all home theater and
sound systems do require an initial set up time. It was fun nevertheless
to determine where to hide the speaker cables, where to place them so
that they aim directly at my listening position. Since the front now consists
of a center speaker, in addition to the left and right, it would be better
to place the left and right speakers far apart, so that there is
clear separation of each channel. If you place them too close together,
the sounds from the front soundstage would be too close together.
Cambridge SoundWorks put alot of thought into the installation
process by providing a quick reference guide and all the necessary
equipment that anyone may need to set them up, without needing you to
run down to the hardware store to get any missing fasteners or cables
midway during instalation. If that happened, it would be really frustrating!
