Cambridge SoundWorks DTT2500
Written by Clarence Song

Output Power

The front left, front right, rear left and rear right speakers are rated at 7 watts RMS each. The center channel is higher powered at 21 watts RMS most probably to handle Dolby Digital decoding, as much of the sound in a movie is concentrated on the screen, where the the center speaker takes on most of the sound reproduction task.

The subwoofer does not need any power. It is connected directly to the DTT2500's amplifier which drives it as 20 watts RMS. Making it slightly less powerful than the subwoofer on the FPS2000, but with similar sound quality.

A Home Theater System?

It would be hard to compare this unit to a full-fledged $2000 home-theater system. The DTT2500 will not be able to fill a large living room, but rather, is meant for a smaller room. In my bedroom, it does the job admirably. Most people who have the unit seldom complain about the lack of power. Rather, its the sound quality of a speaker system that matters.

Sound Quality

Sound quality is very subjective. Some people prefer tons of bass, some prefer to leave their bass and treble controls at the neutral position. But from my tests, the unit performs admirably and would satisfy most people.

The satellite speakers sound crisp and clear. I could hear much of the subtle nuances of the music I tried, like some acoustic, Jazz, orchestral and Pop music. On a poorer speaker system, much of the detail could be easily masked out.

The subwoofer doesn't go down that low as an expensive home-theater subwoofer but covers the low-range of the sound very adequately, given the power output capacity of the DTT2500's amp. Cambridge SoundWorks is aware of that and included a subwoofer output to drive another subwoofer. For a speaker system at this price point, it provides a lot of value as it comes with the all important Dolby Digital decoding for watching DVDs.

All in all, very good sound quality that I would expect from Cambridge SoundWorks, given the high ratings they have garnered for their lineup of multimedia speakers.
