Breaking the Ice...
ALive!: First, a bit on yourself. As the Chief Scientist of Creative Labs, what's your main responsibility?
Dave Rossum: I primarily look after the "intellectual property," particularly as it relates to audio. This means doing lots of different things - some invention, some prodding of the other inventors, looking at acquisition candidates, evaluating technologies and planning technological strategy. I get to deal with the fun stuff, and not to worry too much about the issues of management, budgeting, etc. I also get to do interviews and present papers.
In your opinion, which technological innovation gives you the greatest sense of satisfaction in your years at Creative Labs?
Since E-mu was acquired, I think the implementation of the EMU10K1 processor was the most satisfying project so far for me. Maybe that’s because it was the last thing in which I was actually doing design work. However, I expect some of the things currently behind the scenes (no, I can’t give clues) may eclipse this soon.
We have heard about the Creative-E-mu Tech Center every now and then. So what are some of the interesting research that the Center conducts?
One of the difficulties with being Chief Scientist is that I can’t talk about the majority of the stuff I’m involved with! But some of the Tech Center projects that have been publicly released are SoundFont® technology, the EMU8000 and the EMU10K1 processors, CQM, EAX™, and much of the SB Live! and Live!Ware programs. We have groups working in VLSI, Advanced Music Synthesis and 3D Audio.
