5.1 WDM Drivers Last updated on
May 31, 2001

Boon Leong sent me this set of drivers that he found on his Platinum 5.1 CD. If you have bought an OEM card or have a missing driver CD, you can try these drivers.

Official Version! Creative has finally made the official 5.1 Live!Ware available.

Beware! I have not tested these drivers, so I cannot confirm that they will work. You should only install them with Win2k. WDM drivers do work in WinMe, but so far Creative does not have an official WDM release that works well in Win9x OSes (including WinMe). However the more recent WDM drivers seem to work okay in WinMe, although I urge you to check out the reader feedback to find out if they would work for your configuration.

Where to Download

TRIX has some 5.1 WDM drivers available for download here.

Peter Paul Tuvilla told me that he came across the WDM 5.1 driver available for download at this location (only for 5.1 cards).

Do let me know if it installs correctly.

Your Feedback

I tried the 5.1 WDM drivers on my original Live! card. I agree that the output level was higher, but that may just be due to resetting a previously lowered volume parameter during the installation.

So, did it help with the phase inversion problem dropping the subwoofer output in 4 speaker mode? No

I use digital output to a 6.1 decoder, and with surroud mode, my soundcard drops the bass. Thats OK, because most everything except DVD playback is 2 channel anyway, and I have direct AC3 passthrough for that.

ATI Multimedia drivers would not recognize the new WDM, insisting on the .vxd drivers. ATI Multimedia center 7.1 programs had no sound. The Windows media player equivalents worked just fine, but I like the less bulky interface from ATI.

To sum it up, it made not a bit of difference, caused some incompatability with ATI's multimedia drivers. So out with the new and in with the old for me. Don't bother with this unless you need it for some other specific application.
