The External Audigy Drive

Since Creative provided us with the external Audigy Drive, this is a great opportunity for us to give you our loyal readers a closer look, and find out how it hooks up to the Audigy.

Here's the external Audigy Drive with a nice Audigy logo engraved at the top. The front panel is plastic just like the internal Audigy Drive and the Live!Drives, while the body is metal. Like the internal Audigy Drive, the audio connectors are gold plated but not the optical, SB1394 and MIDI connectors for obvious reasons.

The AUD_EXT header

The flat cable

To connect to the external Audigy Drive, the Audigy card has to be connected to the included extension card. This is done using the AUD_EXT header on the card and the included flat cable.

The longer connector on the left of the flat cable goes to the extension card. It splits up to two smaller connectors (seen on the right). The longer 40-pin one goes to the AUD_EXT header on the Audigy card. The shorter one goes to the JOYSTICK header carrying the joystick and MIDI signals.

Here, the Audigy card is connected to the extension card using the SB1394 cable. This allows the SB1394 port on the Audigy Drive to work. With this configuration, the SB1394 connectors on the Audigy card's backplate and the one on the Audigy Drive can be used at the same time.

The Audigy drive also needs power to operate the onboard ADCs, DACs, optical I/O and IR receiver, so a power splitter cable is provided for the extension card.

The power is then channeled to the Audigy Drive through one the pins on the DB connector. This design eliminates the need for a DC adaptor for the Audigy Drive.

And finally, to connect from the extension card to the Audigy Drive, a cable is included. From the picture below, you'll notice three connectors on the left that connect to the extension card. The yellow DB connector is the joystick/MIDI connector is found at the end that connects to the extension card.

To complete the connection, the DB connectors of the cable are hooked up to the extension card and the Audigy Drive.

Verdict

The design and connection method of the external Audigy Drive is very well thought out and the length of the cable was very generous, giving users the freedom to place the Audigy Drive anywhere, even when the PC is tucked away in a corner. If you can't sacrifice the extra slot for the extension card, the internal Audigy Drive included with the Platinum will also provides the same features.
